Causes and Management

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body processes blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is a critical source of energy for the body’s cells, but when diabetes occurs, the body’s ability to regulate and use glucose is impaired. This happens either because the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin (a hormone that helps glucose enter the cells) or because the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1, where the immune system attacks insulin-producing cells, and Type 2, which is more common and often linked to lifestyle factors like obesity and physical inactivity.

Managing Diabetes Effectively
Proper management of diabetes is essential to prevent complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, and vision loss. For those with Type 1 diabetes, insulin injections are necessary, while Type 2 diabetes can often be managed with lifestyle changes, such as a balanced diet and regular physical activity. Monitoring blood sugar levels, maintaining a healthy weight, and taking prescribed medications are also crucial steps in managing the condition. Early detection and ongoing care can significantly improve the quality of life for those living with diabetes, allowing them to lead active and fulfilling lives. DIABETES
